Insulation
We were surprised that collapsible bottles weren’t among the most insulated models we tested. The 17 oz Hydrapak Stow and 25 oz Nomader Collapsible were two of the most miniature insulative models we evaluated, reaching temperatures 40 degrees above ambient air temperature during our testing. In contrast, the insulated Klean Kanteen TKWide and Brita Stainless Steel Filter Bottle were among our top-rated performers. The Owala FreeSip and Waatr Crazy Cap Pro were also insulative, and we gave the latter a special nod for its triple vacuum seal, which adds to insulation.
If you’re not interested in a collapsible design, the CamelBak Chute Mag Renew and Nalgene Wide-Mouth are reliable choices for backcountry hiking. Both are lightweight, easy to drink from, cup-holder- and side pocket-compatible, and come in a good selection of colours and capacities. However, the Chute Mag isn’t insulated, and its flip-cap mechanism can wear down over time.
